New age technology for new age elections
Delhi has
witnessed an election which were one of its kind as the winning candidate
Arvind kejrival of Aam aadmi party and other parties utilized all sorts of modern technological mediums like broadband,
Mobile internet, smartphones and Social
media to achieve the support of common man and the result is an epic win of a
party which is less than an year old.
Aap members
knew this very well that in order to gain the support of public they need to
ask, listen and reply them in the way they are communicating nowadays.
Throughout their campaign, Aap members heavily utilized the power of social
media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and today’s smartphone based
messaging applications like whatsapp, wechat, etc..
They broadcasted their views on these platforms and result was clear from the likes of their Facebook pages and the views of their YouTube videos that social media can really help to gain support and mobilize the voters. One other mode used by Aap which made an impact on the public was the use of ‘ Robo calling’.
A recorded tape of Chief ministerial candidate Arvind kejrival right through on the mobile phones of the individuals promising a government which will work for the betterment of the common man, was a delightful experience which were never felt before.

The active
participation of Aap members on these social platforms in answering the queries
and indulging in open discussions with public relating to solutions of their
problems created a feeling of trust among them for this common man party. All
these measured followed by Aap resulted in their winning by 25,864 votes over
congress led by three time Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit.
Anyone can post a question or a personal view on the website of the newly won party and can expect a reply from the party members. One can indulge in the discussions on twitter and Facebook about any developmental topic and if lucky can receive a message directly from the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind kejrival.

So is this the time of new age voters? Has Aap
created a new breed of voters in the world's largest democracy who is utilizing
the freedom of speech by modern ways of technology? This will get clear in
coming elections of this year.
But one fact which cannot be ignored is the urban nature of the capital city where Aap won by utilizing the power of social media. Public here is an active user of Internet and the real challenge will be mobilizing the voters in other states like Bihar and some parts of Haryana which are more old-media based and where Internet usage is not like Delhi.
